Shelly Burge

  Shelly Burge Shelly Burge of Lincoln, Nebraska, will be the judge for the 2016 show, Celebrate Quilting! She is a National Quilting Association Certified Judge, award-winning quilt maker, teacher, and author. When Shelly was four she learned to sew on a toy sewing machine.  In 1973 she made her first quilts “just to use up scraps from sewing clothing.”  Since then her work has won awards in national shows such as the NQA, IQA, and AQS, plus they have been exhibited in Europe, Russia and Japan. Small Quilts BookTeaching since 1983, her resume includes classes at numerous Houston Quilt Festivals, NQA, and AQS shows along with traveling to guilds all across the country.  In 2000 she served on the teaching staff of Quilt Expo in France.  She was awarded the first Jewel Pearce Patterson Scholarship sponsored by Quilts, Inc. in 1992.  Shelly was a nominee for the 2004 Quilting Teacher of the Year Award.  She is the author of two quilting books, and a line of patterns. Locally Shelly was named the 1994 Woman Artist of the Year by the Commission on the Status of Women.  In 1985 she was one of the founders of the Nebraska State Quilt Guild and has served as their president.  She was named to the Nebraska Quilters Hall of Fame in 2009. Her quilts are in public and private collections including the International Quilt Study Center.  Her quilt, Crane River Morning is on display at the University of Nebraska.  She designed and organized the completion of a large wall quilt for permanent display at the Nebraska governor’s mansion.Crane_River_Morning She and her husband have two grown children and three grandchildren.  They live in the home they built themselves on the Burge family farm. In addition to judging, Shelly will also give two lectures during the show, "From Traditional to Heavy Metal: A Quilt Makers Journey" and "String Piecing: Old Blocks - New Looks."
